Accused of creating a bogus Red scare and smearing countless innocent victims in a five-year reign of terror, Senator Joseph McCarthy is universally remembered as a demagogue, a bully, and a liar. History has judged him such a loathsome figure that even today, a half-century after his death, his name remains synonymous with witch hunts.

But that conventional image is all wrong, as veteran journalist and author M. Stanton Evans reveals in this groundbreaking book. The long-awaited Blacklisted by History, based on six years of intensive research, dismantles the myths surrounding Joe McCarthy and his campaign to unmask Communists, Soviet agents, and flagrant loyalty risks working within the U.S. government.

Evans' revelations completely overturn our understanding of McCarthy, McCarthyism, and the Cold War. Drawing on primary sources, Evans presents irrefutable evidence of a relentless Communist drive to penetrate our government, influence its policies, and steal its secrets. Most shocking of all, he shows that U.S. officials supposedly guarding against this danger not only let it happen but actively covered up the penetration. All of this was precisely as Joe McCarthy contended.

Evans shows that practically everything we've been told about McCarthy is false, including conventional treatment of the famous 1950 speech at Wheeling, West Virginia, that launched the McCarthy era, the Senate hearings that casually dismissed his charges, and much more.

In the end, Senator McCarthy was censured by his colleagues and condemned by the press and historians. Blacklisted by History provides the first accurate account of what McCarthy did and, more broadly, what happened to America during the Cold War. It is a revealing exposé of the forces that distorted our national policy in that conflict and our understanding of its history since.

Blacklisted by History The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight against America’s Enemies (Audible Audio Edition) M Stanton Evans Tom Weiner Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

The communists have a long-time policy of smearing someone, even if the person has been dead for ever. That is what they have been doing to Senator McCarthy ever since they ran into him. This book sets the real record straight about him. He was a true patriot, and this book should be read by anyone interested in what was happening with the Reds earlier on.
I heard McCarthy speak in 1951, and he was really dynamic, one of the two best speakers that I ever heard in my life. The author has been around in the pro-American, conservative side for decades, and writes only the truth.
Having read two works by Senator McCarthy "The Fight for America" and "America's Retreat From Victory" I have always wondered what substance the attacker of Senator McCarthy had in their arguments. This book will quell any lingering doubts anyone had. Instead of McCarthy being the perpetrator of a campaign of smears and innuendo, a careful reading of this book (with a little historical background about the specific charges and history of that time) should convince anyone of average intelligence that Senator McCarthy was the victim of a campaign of vilification. Evans details the carefully laid plans to "get McCarthy" and to disrupt the investigations he made into security risks in the Department of State, OSS, Voice of America, Fr. Monmouth and many other places. This book provides chapter and verse of his charges and the plans to disrupt his investigations by Sherman Adams, Eisenhower, Jack Anderson and Drew Pearson, Truman and others. It is truly a shameful period in American history and McCarthy's treatment was the most shameful part of it.
When I was growing up in the dark ages we were taught that Senator Joe McCarthy was the incarnation of evil and cruelty. McCarthyism was added to the dictionary to describe the process of destroying innocent victims of a hectoring and cruel attack by a snarling senator. To correct the record I have been spending a lot of time this year reading about the Cold War and the Communist menace to the United States. I recently saw the late M. Stanton Evans on a C-Span program promoting this book. I was intrigued so I ordered his large 663 pages book on Joe McCarthy. My eyes are now open to new interpretations on gunner Joe.
Joe McCarthy(1908-1957) was the blue collar former judge and attorney who was elected as the junior senator from Wisconsin. McCarthy was abrasive and steadfast in his attempt to root out red weeds growing in the grass of the American meadow. McCarthy was felled and censored by the United States Senate. His charges of communist infiltration in the State Depart, US Army Signal Corp and in the China mission were not met with approval by the Eastern Liberal Elite. His name became anathema in the Truman and Eisenhower administration who prevented files from the White House being examined by McCarthy and his team of investigators led by Roy Cohn and a young Robert F. Kennedy. Evans was a strong conservative but I thought this book took an honest and extremely detailed look at McCarthy warts and all. My conclusion is that McCarthy was a patriot who called the nation to an awareness of the red threat in the early Cold War.
The book is not easy to read due to the extensive footnotes, long accounts of congressional fights and vast cast of historical figures to try to keep straight in your mind. It is, however, one of those books which linger in memory and it does provide a valuable counterbalance to the almost universal scorn for McCarthy in the academy. The book is an essential for any student of Joe McCarthy and his tumultuous times.
This book is one of my favorites because it effectively destroys cultural mythology with tangible, visible, solid facts from that time. It is stunning to read how politicians and bureaucrats care more about their prestige than they do about ending corruption and how they care more about the establishment system than about stopping top secret information from getting to murderous Communists. And it's stunning to read how they did everything they accused McCarthy of doing. This book goes in great detail, describing each and every issue regarding so-called McCarthyism and what was truly going on behind the scenes. After a while, you start to realize that the real definition of McCarthyism is the attempt to stop a man from exposing and eliminating mass government corruption. If you like to learn about what Sen. McCarthy did and how he tried to clean up our national government on a mass scale, and how he was harassed and hated by the bigotry and deception of journalists and establishment politicians, you'll enjoy this book. And if you love to destroy cultural myths and delusions, you'll greatly enjoy reading how so many so-called historians, journalists, educators and others have seriously deceived themselves and many in the public into believing shoddy research, fake reports and propaganda created to justify the Establishment's self-adoration and to falsify what McCarthy did and didn't do. What McCarthy did was not wrong, sinful, unethical or even insulting. He was merely the messenger of previously-revealed FBI information about spies and potential spies which was being illegally ignored at the expense of human lives. Few people have the patience he had in seeking to fix this great evil. This book is super-enlightening in depicting how far he went in reducing government corruption and how far many politicians, bureaucrats and journalists went in stopping him. If McCarthyism is an evil witch hunt, it wasn't caused by McCarthy. This is a superb book and thoroughly researched. I bet that critics can only attack this book by personal insults and trivial errors, not by facts, as Commies and Pinkos always do.
Senator Joseph McCarthy saved the United States of America. The senator's reward was that his good name is now linked to the villains of history. This book provides an example of the saying "No good deed goes unpunished". God bless Senator Joseph McCarthy.
